Before selecting a stone, it is always a good idea to learn the differences between each type and to review proper care instructions.

Caring for Natural Stone

We at Lonnie's StoneCrafters take pride in providing you with an investment that will last a lifetime and give you years of functionality. However, in order to for your stone to retain it's natural beauty there are some things that you need to know. The following is a simple do and don't list of how to keep your stone beautiful and looking new for years to come.

Do:

Clean spills up as soon as possible in order to minimize the chance of damage to your stone.
Use a trivet or mat under hot dishes and cookware (the stone will suck the heat out of your food)
Use coasters under drinking glasses, especially if they contain alcohol or citrus juices.
Clean surfaces regularly with natural stone cleaner. We recommend and use DuPont™ Stone Tech® Professional Revitalizer®
Use place mats under any items with a rough bottom in order to not scratch the surface

Don't:

Use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, general purpose cleaners, or abrasive cleaners on your stone.
Place anything directly out of the oven onto the tops as it can cause thermal shock and damage the stone.
Cut on stone as it can leave marks in the stone that are not scratches and are not easy to get out.
Use alkaline cleaners not especially formulated for stone.

Maintenance

Keep your stone and tile looking great by following some simple precautions. The following section covers some of the most common care regimens.

Kitchen and Bathroom Counters

Many household foods, beverages, and cosmetics can degrade tile grout and damage stone. Common toiletries like perfume, mouthwash and toothpaste, as well as common foods such as orange juice and soft drinks contain acids and other ingredients that can degrade sealers or damage your stone's surface. Whether you have stone slab counters or stone, ceramic, or porcelain tile counters always clean spills up as soon as possible.

If you ever encounter lime buildup around your faucet area it is easily cleaned up using a straight edge razor blade at a 45° angle or #0000 steel wool will take care of it.
